Post #2: Chapter 1 Short Answer Essay #4

As a living organism, humans need certain functions to survive.

These necessary functions to stay alive do not only include being able to metabolize, grow, digest food, and excrete wastes. They also include maintaining homeostasis, moving, and reproducing.

To begin with, one very important function is homeostasis. This is the ability to maintain stable internal conditions. The reason why this is so important is because humans need stable internal conditions in order to survive. If homeostasis is disrupted, it may lead to a disease or illness that can be terminal. This terminal disease or illness may, in the worst case, cause death. This is why homeostasis is such an important function in the human body.

Another necessary function is moving. You may be thinking "What's so important about moving? I could probably stay on my bed forever." but that is false. When a person stops moving, different parts of the body begin to shut off one by one. This is also the reason why a coma patient must have a scheduled time where their limbs are moved and stretched by a physical therapist. The movement allows the patient's body to recognize that he/she is still alive. In this way, movement is an important function because it keeps the bodies muscles in working order.

Lastly, reproduction is very important to not only the individual but to the world. For instance, what if all the people on Earth suddenly stopped having kids. The result would be that there would eventually be no one left on Earth anymore. This reason alone is enough to recognize the importance of the reproductive system.

In conclusion, humans have many necessary functions that keep us alive.
