Post #5: Chapter 3 Short Answer Essay #7

Our bodies are composed of cells, but cells are also composed of different organelles.

The cellular organelles include the nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, golgi apparatus, lysosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, and vacuole. However, plant cells have 2 additional organelles; the cell wall and the chloroplasts.

In the cell, the nucleus serves as the command center. This means that the nucleus controls the functions of the cell and contains DNA. The mitochondria of the cell make energy out of food and the ribosomes make protein. The golgi apparatus helps in making the proteins as well as processing and packaging them. Lysosomes help break down and digest food using its digestive enzymes. The endoplasmic reticulum is like the transportation system of the cell. It transports all sorts of items around the cell. With all this water and food going into the cell, there needs to be a storage area. This is where the vacuole comes into play. The vacuole is basically the storage room of the cell and it usually stores food and water. Additionally, plant cells have 2 extra organelles. These organelles are the cell wall and the chloroplast. The cell wall supports and protects the cell while the chloroplast use photosynthesis to convert sunlight into energy.

All together, these organelles work to keep the cell alive and functional.
